Maningrida Community Leads Action on Rheumatic Heart Disease – Take Heart

– Because it is a bit of a complex story and we felt that the
community had pretty much no understanding why
their children were going to Melbourne to have their heart’s fixed, they had no understanding
on how it started and what the community could
do to prevent this happening. So we dealt these extensive
educational modules and that was led by the local language and culture team through the school, and thirdly, we also trained
indigenous health workers to understand rheumatic fever
and rheumatic heart disease better, but to also, to be able to perform brief echocardiograms,
which is a scan of the heart to detect rheumatic heart disease. So empowering the local
health workers to diagnose rheumatic heart disease
in their own people. (upbeat music)
