Lung Cancer or Valley Fever?


(upbeat music) – [Dr. Peterson] It’s hard
to be a doctor in Fresno and not have to deal with Valley Fever. (upbeat music) The other presentation that we’ll see are infections with Valley Fever that maybe weren’t recognized when the initial infection happened, and they’re left with a scar that can look exactly like lung cancer. – I was having a chest pain, and I went to my family physician, and she sent me to have a chest scan, and I was told that they
thought I had lung cancer. – So, that’s the nodule that brought him into the nodule clinic. If you were not in an endemic area, frequently, patients like this would go straight to surgery. (upbeat music) The PCR is positive. So, that tells us that we have DNA in that sample specific for the organism that causes Valley Fever. (upbeat music) What we found was if we had somebody that we were concerned that they might have lung cancer, up to 1/3 of those patients
actually had Valley Fever. (upbeat music) I think anytime that
somebody’s presenting with a respiratory illness severe enough that they felt the need to
seek their doctor’s help, that they’re in an endemic area, they should be comfortable
asking their doctor, “Could this be Valley Fever”? (upbeat music)
