Another risk factor for heart attacks in rheumatoid
arthritis… fat around the heart? Epicardial fat a risk factor for heart disease
in rheumatoid arthritis Nancy Walsh writing in Medpage Today reported
on a study from Vanderbilt University published in Arthritis Care and Research. Investigators
found the volume of epicardial adipose tissue in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
correlated with the presence of the metabolic syndrome and cardiometabolic risk factors,
which may help explain why they’re at risk for premature atherosclerosis. Comment: Another reason to maintain ideal
weight if you have rheumatoid arthritis.
