Diabetes Knowledge: Which Foods Could You Be Addicted To?

Hi guys. I wanted to share with you the
first thing that I’ve learned about food addiction and that is the Yale food
addiction scale. Basically, at Yale University they did a study on which
foods cause the most addictive response and what they found is, the number one
most addictive foods out there are your high fats, high glycemic load foods.
Basically, your processed foods. A lot of your processed foods will strip out all
the fiber and the protein and the water and you’ll end up with a very highly
concentrated, high-fat, high glycemic load meaning high carbohydrate food that will
then get digested in your system very quickly gets absorbed into your
bloodstream and will activate the region of your brain that is involved with
addiction. So, the reason there is, if you think of an avocado for example, it’s a
high-fat food but you’ll never be addicted to avocados. Why? Because it
still has all that protein and fiber and water in there so, that it slows the
absorption down, it doesn’t trigger that part of your brain that causes addiction
that makes you want more. It’s like a an intense hit when you have processed
foods, it’s an intense hit to your brain and then an intense release of dopamine
so, you end up wanting more of those foods and it becomes very addictive and
it’s because of that processing. So, natural, organic, foods that come right
out of the ground will never, you’ll never be addicted to them although
you’ll desire them because they’re so delicious you won’t get physically
addicted. And the…oh, one other point they made is that refined sugar actually has the same addictive behavior, shows the same addiction or even more than cocaine. So,
like rats and the poor little rats in the..they’d actually…they pushed the button for more sugar at a continuously growing amount. So, just like cocaine where you
have a little bit at first and then you end up needing more and more and more.
Same with the sugar, you need more of a hit to get that same high feeling. So,
keep that in mind next time you reach for anything processed. It’s a really
addictive food. Try and switch your diet towards picking up a pear or banana or a
salad or a red pepper. They’re delicious. So, try that instead and comment, let me
know how else I can help you guys or how else you can turn to alternative options
and stay away from processed foods. Alright. That’s it.
